Language is essentially a means of communication among the members of a society and or the entire world. Language is the main tool in the expression of culture and history that conveys traditions and values related to group identity.
The need to communicate led to the emergence and evolution of the language. Languages all around the world are influenced by many factors such as the society ‘members, economy, geography and history among others. Languages are in a continuum development throughout the time.
I believe a fundamental approach to teaching language is the Communicative approach and in addition to this it is also very important to create a supportive context for teaching language. I believe the key to learning a language is the context because this way learner can lock better, foreign lexis in their long term memory. Vocabulary for example, should be taught in context, it has to be meaningful for the students hence they you should avoid learning from random lists, phrase books, and vocabulary drills.
When there is a motive to learn something students can feel more motivated and interested in doing so because there is a reason to learn. As the main goal for using a language is to communicate something, teachers need to create meaningful and useful lessons to teach a new language.
According to Sandra Savignon, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) had to do with communication in terms of four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners were thought as active participants in the negotiation of meaning therefore I think teaching and learning is a two-way and collaborative process because students learn a language and teachers learn how to teach and how students acquire language in different ways.
Through the history of language teaching there were many approaches to teach a language, Grammar- Translation Approach, Direct Approach, Reading Approach, Audiolingualism, the Silent Way and the Communicative Approach among others. The appearance of a new approach was a way to improve and complement the older one. Today one of the most used teaching language approach is the CLT.
In addition there are other language teaching methods such as Presentation Practice Production (PPP) or Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) that are very useful in ESL/EFL teaching and learning.
To sum up I believe the best way to teach a language is through a Communicative approach keeping in mind the importance of context and scaffold students in their learning process.
